ARTIST STATEMENT:
“My paintings are an instinctual improvisation of mark-making. This marking process is initially more interesting than the final product. Usually starting with pours of color, I then carve out interesting areas while considering composition and scale. Finally, I focus on how all the components work together.
I find joy in the ambiguous shapes that emerge and their humorous dialogues. Shapes that seem strange but are easily recognizable by our brain, seemingly familiar but not known as everyday objects rather known on a deep level in the interior perhaps because they mimic organic or body structures. Finding the exact color palette is the driving force that keeps me engaged. Colors transform the painting over and over, like actors in a play.
My agenda for the painting may not be where it wants to go. Allowing the painting to succeed on its own terms is sometimes more interesting.”
