Paper Kites

April 11, 2024 by Jennifer Blumenstock

an abstract multimedia collage on canvas in shades of pale mint, mint green, and white. the top half of the piece is white. the bottom half of the piece is a pale cobalt blue. there is a thin strip of tangerine-colored paper that winds its way around the piece, creating a path like an unexpected journey. On the surface, this canvas appears as though it consists of lines that form abstract shapes, atop geometrically straight rectangles, all applied by the stroke of a paintbrush. However, as you step forward the lines of these shapes disconnect from the canvas and you notice each was placed on by hand: using hand-cut, extremely fine thin strips of paper masterfully layered upon the canvas. Moreover, once this realisation sets in, you suddenly become aware of an entirely new layer of texture. Different hand-cut shapes of paper adhere to the canvas before any painting takes place. Creating a degree of texture and depth to delightfully unexpected.

However, as you step forward the lines of these shapes disconnect from the canvas and you notice each was placed on by hand: using hand-cut, extremely fine thin strips of paper masterfully layered upon the canvas. March 28, 2024 by Lauren Zogg

an abstract acrylic piece on linen showing an exterior landscape featuring a large central palm tree, a small red-roofed house that is peach and pale pink, and several other trees, some leafy and some scraggly. the brushstrokes are smooth and undetectable, and each item is colorblocked in with little to no dimension. the artist has created dimension by varying the shades used in the different items. the only piece of this landscape that has value variation is the sky, which fades from a light periwinkle at the top to a soft pale blue towards the horizon.
