Philip Durst Studio (Emma Woelk)

Artist Information
Back To Artists

Drawn to the beauty in discarded packaging and paper, Philip Durst created collages that used pattern and repetition to quilt-like effect. These pieces combine the colorful, ubiquitous design of grocery packaging with pages of the Texas case law books he used in his career as a civil rights and employment attorney. Emma Woelk, Durst’s daughter, carries on his artistic practices under the name Philip Durst Studio. Woelk, a professor of German in Austin, Texas, sees these collages as a way to celebrate her father’s legacy and to explore the ways we create beauty and alternate meaning through reuse and juxtaposition.
